Battle of the Great Grass Plains by wraithdt Battle of the Great Grass Plains by wraithdt
This is one of ten pieces I did for the new Star Wars Essential Guide to Warfare. I had a blast working on it and I'm excited that I am able to contribute to the Star Wars universe.

I will be posting them in the order of sequence as it appears in the book. Hope you guys enjoy them!

An aerial panoramic view of the famous Battle of Grassy Plains in Ep 1. It was very tedious to paint hordes of Gungans and Battle Droids plus I had to make sense of the troop formations but it all turned out well in the end.

I always found it odd how a species with shields and energy weaponary still used catapaults and animals. Great picture though.

while I would recommend googling/researching yourself because it helps keep you open minded/smart. but if you researched you would come across the Wookieepedia which has plenty of useful information if you looked and also the star wars website itself but since you didnt bother I looked for you.

Souce 1

The power source for Gungan technology was a mysterious blue-white energy "goo" that was mined in the depths of Naboo's oceans. The viscous plasmic material formed the basis of Gungan weaponry as well. The Gungans had mastered energy field technology for a number of uses. Their underwater cities employed hydrostatic fields to create large bubbles of atmosphere within which they dwell. Similarly, Gungan ground troops carried portable frames which generate a protective energy field capable of deflecting blaster fire.

Source 2

The Gungans primarily use organic technology and grow their vehicles and weapons. Much of their equipment is hand-crafted. The Grand Army's strategy was defensive-oriented with their deflector shield generators mounted on their large animals, the fambaas. The deflector shield blocked laser blasts but allowed slower-moving objects in. The Gungan offensive weaponry consisted of spears, atlatls, Electropole and cestas for throwing boomas. Gungan battle wagons pulled by falumpasets carried large energy balls for use in catapults. The Gungans also used bongos for transporting supplies. The Grand Army used kaadus as mounts for their officers and as cavalry, with their riders using flamethrowers. Other kaadus were mounted with weapons to serve as anti-infantry units. The Grand Army also used biological units as heavy weapons, such as cerrabores and lerraas, and swifts. Other heavy weapons included raapturs. Glurrgs assisted the Grand Army as workers.

Source 3
In contrast to the peaceful human colonists of Naboo, the native Gungans are a proud warrior species. The amphibians have long maintained a huge standing army -- the Gungan Grand Army -- as one of their proudest traditions. The Gungans prefer technology that is harmonious with the ecology of their world. Their weaponry is no different. The Gungan Grand Army uses domesticated animals for transport -- Gungan scouts ride swift-footed kaadu into combat, while hardy falumpasets and fambaas haul heavy weapons and shield generators into place.

All in all Gungans are an advanced race but prefer to use biological weapons/defenses that are environmentally driven/made and are harmonious with the ecology of their world. If this doesnt satisfy you then I suggest doing your own research. Its quite fun learning about other worlds.

It's just their cultural way of doing battle.
alphastriker1 Featured By Owner Jul 18, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
Actually, it was Organic plasma. The shields were composed of very volatile plasma which shorted out after 5-ish minutes.
The weapons they used were basically organic volatile sludge.

I think that clears some stuff up.
Ragerancher Featured By Owner Jul 18, 2014
Not really relevant, they are still using animals and catapaults.
alphastriker1 Featured By Owner Jul 19, 2014  Hobbyist General Artist
Well, they arent exactly technologically advanced now are they.
Ragerancher Featured By Owner Jul 20, 2014
They have sheilds, weird plasma bombs, build a craft that can go through the centre of the planet but still use catapaults and animals. Yes they are technologically advanced, it's just very inconsistent.

That's fantasy warfare for you, a laser pistol in one hand and a sword in the other.  :D (Big Grin)

Oh my god man I love these! The book is really, really fantastic and so very much thanks to your art pieces. Really spectacular. Such realism and such attention to detail. And an eye for action. Thank you so much for making these and bringing the SW universe's unseen locations and battles to life.

Your other work is amazing too, props!

Great work in persisting with the troop formations. I can imagine it would be pain-staking doing it in CG (as in, each unit has to be just slightly out of sync, can't just 'copy-and-paste'), how much more painful it would be to do it in a painting, even if it's only one frame. Very epic atmosphere here.

I like it, it remind me the problem of design for those Battle droids that drives the speeder, the STAPS, the exhaust engines are in front of their knees, and they seems very Hot, maybe those specific droids have improved alloy in their knees. Or... they are getting off of that before they have knee problems,... :)

My favorite part is the Gungan cavalry (kaadury?) charge flanking the droids. Tactics!
