Battle of Evesham by wraithdt Battle of Evesham by wraithdt
Another painting I did for Medieval Warfare Magazine back in 2012.

If you're a Brit who know his/her history, I assume you'll probably recognize the knight in red. Son of the famous crusader of the same name, Simon de Monfort was one of the founders of parliamentary democracy in England and leader of the Second Baron's War. Here he faces against Gilbert de Clare, fighting under the banner of Prince Edward(future King Edward I "Longshanks"), in the Battle of Evesham where he was eventually killed.

More info on the battle here >> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_o…

For those interested you can check out the magazine here. Its a very interesting magazine if you're in to medieval history. >> [link]

The great helm is probably a little early for the date.  It was invented in Italy around 1260 I believe, and would have spread throughout europe a bit later than that.

Also, I think there would normally be rawhide underneath the shield, so cutting up the linen wouldn't immediately expose the wood on the shield.

Well if nothing else I'd say Simon had one seriously awesome set of armor. Red knight for the win.

Great work. Very impressive. I thought I recognised the De Montfort heraldry. I did the elder Simon on my Siege of Carcassonne piece.

This is my favorite era of history!  I absolutely love your style- you overlook not details!  The smoky sky, the light upon the metal, the sword drenched with blood, the eyes of Simon de Montfort fixed upon his adversary... they all contribute to a fascinating spectacle!

Ah yes, de Montfort-the knight who taught Edward to NEVER neglect his barons or Magna Carta. Love the detail.

He was killed in this battle against Edward so much for the Barons and the Magna Carta or Edward "lesson".
